Sizing up your baby

Tags:      Posted date:  February 11, 2011  |  Comment

We are often asked by expecting mums and gift buyers what size is best when buying for a baby. It can be very confusing when your starring at the miniature clothing sprawled out before you in stores with a sea of zeros.

We hope this quick sizing guide will help you “zero” in on what all the zeros mean and help you decide what’s best.

Here is our quick guide to how it works:

Size 00000 - is for premature babies

Size 0000 – is for small newborns

Size 000 – newborns to 3months

Size 00 – 3months to 6 months

Size o – 6 months to 12 months

Generally, a full-term healthy newborn baby can go straight into a 000. In the first few weeks, all-in-one baby suits are often best as they have press studs for easy changing and often have inbuilt mitts.

If you are buying for your first baby we suggest getting a mixture of size 0000 and000 clothing but not too many items as you will often receive clothing as gifts and babies grow so fast.

If you are buying a gift for a family member or friend, consider clothing in larger sizes 000 + as they will definately be welcome as baby grows.

TIP – when buying larger sizes, bear in mind the month in which the baby and the appropriate season for larger sized clothing items. Hopefully our guide will help.

Happy Shopping!

As an auntie and now a great-auntie I have always bought one size larger as everybody else buys the “now” size and babies grow outof them so soon. Healthwise It is better for them to be a little loose than tight anyway. Also sizes vary from brand to brand. On one occasion I bought two different brands of trackpants – 2 different sizes from 2 different shops, as the first one didn’t have school uniform colour in both sizes.. The pair which were supposed to be the smaller size, in fact were larger than the other pair. I have recently discovered that sometimes the only difference is the length. If the baby/child has long arms or legs sometimes it pays to get one size larger. Tops ride-up and leave part of their backs uncovered. They can get surnburnt in that strip, or the very cold air can effect their kidneys. My geat-niece is long in the body. It became apparent when at age 3yo she started ballet and the body width fitted but the body section was far too short and she had to keep pulling it down at the legs. My two nieces were exactly 2 years apart. As the elder one grew out of her clothes, the younger one went into them mostly within 2 months. They simply went from one wardrobe to the other.
