Bassinets & Safe Sleeping for Babies

Tags:      Posted date:  May 13, 2011  |  No comment

SIDS and Kids is dedicated to saving babies and children’s lives through the elimination of sudden and unexpected infant deaths. Their website has some invaluable tips for safe sleeping which every parent and carer should read. Their top tips for safe sleeping include:

How to Sleep your Baby Safely:

1. Sleep baby on the back from birth, not on the tummy or side

2. Sleep baby with face uncovered (no doonas, pillows, lambs wool, bumpers or soft toys)

3. Avoid exposing babies to tobacco smoke before birth and after

4. Provide a safe sleeping environment (safe cot, safe mattress, safe bedding)

5. Sleep baby in their own safe sleeping environment next to the parent’s bed for the first six to twelve months of life

A bassinet is a practical, space saving option for sleeping baby in your bedroom (its also handy having baby close to hand in the first few weeks for night feeds and peace of mind!) Your tiny new baby is used to being confined in a compact space and they look so small in a big cot. Sometimes you feel more comfortable putting your baby to bed in a smaller space.

There are so many bassinets on the market from which to choose. A bassinet is suitable for your baby until approx 5 mths of age (until they begin to roll and pull themselves up) But here are some of our favourites:

Cariboo NZ’s Gentle Motions Bassinet is a stylish nursery piece. The bassinet hangs using unique non-slip, adjustable, webbing straps which allows you to adjust the angle of the bassinet (especially helpful when baby is suffering a cold or from colic). It can be used inside a cot or on a stand.

The stunning Leander Cradle takes the traditional cradle into the new millennium; timeless and modern. The Leander Cradle can be suspended from a hook in the ceiling or in a tripod  which allows you to move it around the house. The calm and smooth movements of the Leander Cradle stimulates baby’s senses, just like being in the mother’s womb.

The Seed Organic Pod is a beautiful bassinet comprising a Moses Basket and Stand. With a natural latex breather hole mattress, the environment this cradle creates for your baby is a lvoely  Green start in life for your baby

Another options is a multipurpose sleeper such as the Bloom Alma Urban Cot works for infants as a sleep solution, bassinet or portable crib. Available in 5 colours, this cot is smaller than average cots and can fold away for easy storage.

There are many lovely bassinets to suit every parent’s individual style and space, see some of the stunning ranges by Cariboo NZ, Leander, Bloom, Seed Organic, Kanoe at www.metromum.com.au and in store.
